Townhomes have their own packing logic. Multiple floors, a single staircase, a garage tucked under the living space, and no easy place to stage boxes — get the order wrong and you'll carry the same box up and down the stairs three times.

The fix is simple: pack by floor, move by floor, and never let a box travel past its destination. Here's the plan our Atlanta crews follow.

Work Top Floor to Bottom — Always

Start on the highest floor and work your way down. Boxes from the top floor move down; nothing ever needs to go up. When the upper floors are empty and staged at the base of the stairs, you've eliminated an entire category of wasted labor.

On a three-level townhome, that usually means primary suite and secondary bedrooms first, then the main living level, then the ground floor and garage.

The Stair Landing Rule

Townhome stairwells are narrow, which makes them the worst place to store boxes. Keep one landing clear at all times so you can move safely with an armload. Boxes stage in the room nearest the stairs on the floor you're working, not on the stairs themselves.

If your staircase turns, box sizes matter more than you'd expect. Large boxes that fit a hallway can wedge solidly at a switchback, and a wedged box is how walls get scuffed.

Pack Smaller Than You Think

In a townhome, every box gets carried up and down. Keep book boxes, kitchen boxes, and garage boxes small enough to hold comfortably with one hand on the rail. Two small boxes cost less effort than one box you can't safely carry.

Kitchen and Living Level Second to Last

Save the kitchen and main living level for the day before the move. Those are the rooms you live in, and packing them early means eating takeout off a box for a week. Do the bedrooms, closets, and storage first, then finish with the kitchen and the everyday dishes.

Garage, Tools and Outdoor Gear Last

The garage goes last because it's usually where the packing materials, the tape, and the boxes live. Leave it until everything else is done, then load heavy tools at the bottom of the stack and strap long items — ladders, mops, folding tables — so they can't shift.

Our crews pack a two-level townhome in a single day, labeling every box by floor and room so unloading follows the same path the boxes took on the way out.
